If you then, despite your evil nature, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him.  – Mt 7:11

Reflection.  Try to get into the spirit of faith.   Do not expect bad things to happen.  Await the Lord’s goodness like a joyful child standing before the Christmas tree, awaiting the opening of the presents.

Prayer.  I trust You, Lord, and that means I trust Your love.  I can expect the best from You.  Even in times of suffering I will not succumb to doubt.

Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.           – Mt 25:40

Reflection.  This text is the most important one in all the Scriptures.  Once you understand it, your life will never be the same.  Jesus continues to live His passion.  He continues to fall, poor and hungry, just as He did on the way to Calvary.

Prayer.  Lord, I have been given so much.  Give me ears to hear the cry of the poor, and the will to respond generously and compassionately to You, living in them.

By faith their weakness was turned into strength as they became mighty in battle and put foreign armies to flight.  – Heb 11:33-34

Reflection.  The Lord is waiting for your trust.  You can give Him your weakness, your problems, your weariness.  He is ready to make His power available.  You have only to ask.

Prayer.  Lord, help me to understand Your silence the way St. Paul did.  It is a silence that gives power to those who have faith.

After hearing the Word of God, they hold it fast with a right and good heart and bear fruit in patience.      – Lk 8:15

Reflection.  Let a person come forward, a living person capable of speaking to the heart; let truth flow from this person’s life and let the person’s power be matched by an equal gift of love.  Then people will listen to the Good News, and the dawn of better days will brighten our skies.  – Cardinal Duval

Prayer.  Dear Jesus, I have heard Your Word and I come forward to follow You.  Let me speak the truth with hope, and together we will bear rich fruit.

Pray for those who persecute you. – Mt. 5:44

Reflection.  If you are going to have real joy in your heart and soul you must be willing to forgive.  The best way to forgive is to pray for that person.  No family can live in harmony without repeated acts of forgiveness.  However, you do not have to become a doormat for anyone.

Prayer.  Father, I forgive, but I need help with my bad feelings.  I know that in time those feelings will evaporate as long as the offending party changes.

Leaving the Sanhedrin, the Apostles rejoiced that they had been found worthy to suffer disgrace for the sake of the Name.  – Acts 5:41

Reflection.  Feeling joy while one is suffering public disgrace for the Lord may seem a contradiction, but the Saints experienced it all the time.  This joy is a by-product of surrendering to the Lord.  “Blessed are you when you are persecuted for My sake” (Mt 5:11).  These words are true.

Prayer.  Dear Lord, the Gospel message often baffles me.  Help me to understand these supernatural truths, and more importantly, help me to trust You completely.

You have been called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use freedom as an occasion for sensuality.  – Gal 5:13a

Reflection.  Feel free, you are not bound by servile fear.  Genuine love is the supreme law.  That means you have to be free from public opinion so that you may love those in need.  Even if your peers think you are crazy for taking the risk, do it anyway.  Remember, the overweight lady is Christ, so is the prisoner, and the alcoholic.  The Lord comes into our lives in various disguises.

Prayer.  Heavenly Father, teach me to cherish the freedom that is Your gift, a freedom that is not afraid to commit itself to love.

If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?  – Mt 5:46

Reflection.  This is the hardest thing to understand.  We are actually expected to love people who do not care a twit for us.  Do you see why?  The Lord loves them, but they do not know it.  He is depending on you to be His channel of communications.  You do not need words.   Just do a kind deed now and then; even a smile can open the door to a new beginning for someone in need.

Prayer.  Extend my love, O Lord, beyond my family and friends to those who need my concern.  Let me reach out to them in concrete ways.

If you are willing to obey, you will eat the best food the land has to offer.  – Isa 1:19

Reflection.  The spiritual life of a person does not consist of mere attention to one’s soul, but of a free and unconditional response to the call of the Holy Spirit, whatever the cost may be … It is a life soaked through and through by a sense of His reality and claim.  Christ’s whole ministry was an illustration of this mystery.  – Evelyn Underhill

Prayer.  Dear Holy Spirit, Soul of my soul, I am listening.  I want You to be the center of my life.  I am Yours.

Amen, I say to you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  – Mt 18:3

Reflection.  A child is one who trusts.  Survival depends on it.  The most important work is not that which you do:  it is that which you allow the Lord to do through you.  Trust Him.  Do not worry about the results of your work.  The Lord will give it growth and fruitfulness in the measure in which it is entrusted to Him.  The more you give, the more He will increase your capacity for growing.

Prayer.  Lord, bestow on me the grace to be childlike in my love for You.  I trust You and I will follow You all the days of my life.
