Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the Will of God for you in Christ Jesus.  - 1 Thes 5:18

Reflection.  Given all the gifts that God has bestowed on you, it is almost rude to be a complainer.  Dorothy Day called this gratitude “the duty of delight.”  Gratitude always makes you feel better.

Prayer.  I thank You, Father, for my being and my life.

He has anointed us and marked us with His seal and given us the Spirit in our hearts.  - 2 Cor 1:22

Reflection.  Because of a deep sense of Christian community, the harmony of the group is a prime attribute.  Be more group-minded than self-centered.  You’ll feel a lot better.

Prayer.  Holy Spirit, let me use my gifts and talents for others.

If you forgive others … your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  - Mt 6:14

Reflection.  Here is a formula for being unlikable:  hold on to your grudges, never forget a criticism, and always resent those who hurt your feelings.  Instead imitate Jesus Who said, “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do” (Mt 23:34).

Prayer.  Dear Jesus, You not only forgave Your enemies, You made excuses for them.  I need a lot of help to get to that level.

Have no fear of sudden terror … The Lord will be your assurance.  - Prov 3:25, 26

Reflection.  Psychiatrist Dr. Abraham Low said, “Just because you feel helpless about something doesn’t mean there is no hope.  Feelings are not facts.”  The fact is that you have the power of God within you.  Jesus said that prayer can move mountains (Mt 21:21).  Take Him at His word and pray with assurance.

Prayer.  Jesus, teach me to put all my hope in You.

I will give you a new heart, and put a new spirit within you.  - Ezek 36:26

Reflection.  ”Do not look for Jesus apart from yourself.  He is not somewhere out here.  He is within you” (Mother Teresa of Calcutta).  We focus too often on the material world around us and ignore the invisible world of spiritual treasures.  Divine powers reside within you.

Prayer.  Help me to look within myself, Lord.

All things work together for good for those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.     - Rom 8:28

Reflection.  It’s true, once you have faith deep enough to realize how much God loves you, you will have to feel good about yourself.  God thinks you are lovable, and He is never wrong.

Prayer.  Dear Lord, thank You for loving me.

As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.  Remain in My love.  - Jn 15:9

Reflection.  To love others well, you have to love yourself.  Love of self is not self-centered.  Rather it is a love that reflects the mystery of God’s unchanging love for you.  Don’t put yourself down, and don’t abuse your body with excessive eating and drinking.

Prayer.  Help me, Lord, to love myself in the proper way.

An intelligent man remains silent … a trustworthy man keeps things hidden.  - Prov 11:12, 13

Reflection.  One way to endear yourself to others is to be willing to listen when they need to talk.  You will perform a valuable service by virtually doing nothing except remaining quiet, and showing concern.  This will take enormous willpower in many cases, but you will be appreciated more than you know.

Prayer.  Help me to understand, Lord, that my silence is often the greatest gift I can give.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will have their fill.  - Mt 5:6

Reflection.  Abraham Lincoln kept our nation together with words of wisdom like these:  “If the union of these States, and the liberties of these people be lost, it is but little to any one man … but a great deal to millions of others, and to their posterity.”  Now we can thank God we stood the course, but then the Civil War seemed so wasteful.

Prayer.  Grant me, Lord, the wisdom to know Your Will.

Serve as an example to the believers in your speech and conduct.  - 1 Tim 4:12

Reflection.  Don’t store up resentments; they will eventually burst out in words and shouts that will inflict pain and wound feelings.  Forgive quickly.  At least pray for the grace to let go, and let God be God.  Control your speech, and you will be pleasing to the Lord.

Prayer.  Dear God, I can’t do this without a minor miracle.  Please help me.
